Spinal Mobilization for Back Pain

If you are someone who fears going to the chiropractor, you may be missing out on a safe, effective, and very gentle treatment that can make a big difference in relieving back and neck pain.

Within the last 10 years, spinal manipulation (aka a chiropractic adjustment) has become one of the best and most recommended treatments for back pain. In numerous research studies, its safety and effectiveness has proven to be better than medications alone, as well as other treatment modalities. Its unique treatment effects involve pain relief, decreased muscle tension and spasm, improved flexibility and range of motion, improved posture, and much more, all without the need for medication.

What if you are afraid of going to the chiropractor?

What if you can't tolerate spinal manipulation? What if a chiropractic adjustment is contraindicated due to a pre-existing health condition, or you simply don’t like the popping noise associated with the treatment?

Are you stuck with having to take drugs for your back or neck pain?

Fortunately, no. There is a very similar treatment your chiropractor can perform that seems to impart the same beneficial effect as spinal manipulation, but does not involve the issues listed above. It is called spinal mobilization.

Spinal mobilization is a way of gently moving the spinal bones (called vertebrae). This movement helps to relieve pain and muscle tension while restoring normal motion and alignment of the spine. It can be performed in any location of the spine (neck, mid back, and low back), and can be used on almost all spinal related conditions (including vertebral subluxations).

Because of the gentle nature of this treatment, I use spinal mobilization on many of my patients. I have found it is great for kids, athletes, the elderly, people in severe pain, and those patients who don’t want me to “crack their neck”. The only downside I have found using spinal mobilization (instead of manipulation), is sometimes it can take a little longer to achieve our treatment goals.

Like all healthcare, some people respond better to certain treatments than others. Many people choose not to visit a chiropractor because they believe that spinal manipulation is the only treatment option. In my office, and many other chiropractic offices, this is not the case.

If you are looking for a drug-free way to relieve your back pain but have been avoiding the chiropractor, spinal mobilization may provide the relief you want, without the concerns of spinal manipulation.
